The Ashland Plaza
Ashland had it’s beginning in the 1800’s with the
erection of a water-powered sawmill and flour mill on
the banks of Ashland Creek. The structures occupied what
is now Lithia Park. Shops and boarding houses were soon
built on the present plaza site representing the first
improved
real estate in Ashland, Oregon. Because many of the
early settlers came from other towns in the U.S. of the
name Ashland, the townspeople dubbed the new settlement
Ashland Mills. Ashland Mills became an official town
with the opening of a U.S. post office in 1855. By 1859,
Ashland Mills had a population of 50, all of whom lived
in and around the town center. By 1900, the town had
grown to a population of 3000. Ashland Mills had now
become known simply as Ashland. The center of town
was then referred to as The Ashland Plaza.
To this day, The Ashland Plaza is still the center of
activity in this wonderful small town of just 20,000
population. Throughout the years, the Plaza has been
maintained to reflect the first days of Ashland, and is
one of the nation’s most precious historical sites.
